Mr. Chester Johnson has
given extensive, devoted, and unselfish
service to the progress and uplifting of the
citizens of the Garland community,
especially African Americans. He currently
serves as chair for the Legal Redress
Committee for the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
He was a major player in the desegregation
of the Garland Independent School District.
He has been a champion in promoting justice,
equal, and fair treatment of minority
students in the GISD. He has served on the
GISD Multi-Ethnic Committee, Leadership
Garland, Garland Plan Commission, Garland
Area Brotherhood Chair, Garland Improvement
Committee, and Pearl C. Anderson Board of
Directors, Chair of the East Garland
Committee of Concerned Citizens, Chair of
the George Washington Carver Alumni Programs
and Services Organization, created and
produced Cable TV shows "Footloose" and
"Highlights", Garland Citizens Police
Academy, Garland Community Development
Advisory Committee, Target Area
Representative of the Dallas Area Action
Committee, Democratic Precinct Chairman for
District 2, Coach and Player for the Garland
Cobras Semi-Professional Football team,
Coach of the Garland Pee Wee Football and
Basketball programs, and as Chairman of the
campaign to elect Annie Dickson to the City
Council of Garland, Texas.
He has attended Richland
College, Amber University, Southern Bible
Institute, and Slidell Baptist Seminary and has
a Bachelor's Degree in Theology.
Chester's legacy of community
service remains an unmatched beacon of light and
inspiration for our city. His works speaks for
himself and epitomizes the deep devotion to the
service of the community.
He is married to Gertha "Lady"
Johnson and they have a son, Christopher, and a
daughter, Tosha.
